It was a remarkable time of courage, conscience, and strife in US history. Anyone who lived through those times should chime in. Please add some perspective to the "sky is falling" sentiment of the blogosphere. We Americans have come a long way against fairly tall odds.

I always find the "the country has never been more divided" quip you often see tossed about in current political discussions, a good tell as to being able to write that speaker off as someone who has no historical perspective whatsoever.
