Honestly the key to having a math mind is not thinking of everything in rules and steps to solve. It's understanding how to manipulate an equation. Algebra is all about knowing that one side of the equal sign is the exact same as the other. So if you do one thing to one side and then to the other, they're still equal. Remember a few rules (I realize thus is contradictory to what I just said about rules, but these are simple rules, not "follow these 10 steps rules") and practice until you realize whats the most efficient way to attack a problem from experience. Reduce it until you isolate your unknown variables and you're done. It sounds complicated, but it's really not. People just build math up to be this big scary monster.
