Played pick up with him a few years back after he was arrested and charged.

He played with one of those bracelets you wear on your ankle when you are under house arrest. Didn't know whether to laugh or be scared.

I chose to be scared.

Probably the right choice. Though it sounds like this kid just really had no guidance and got lured into some bad choices. I'm not making excuses for the guy, especially since, like the previous poster mentioned, some of this 'good boy' stuff in the article is probably embellished to a good extent.
