“‘I can’t swim good,’ Joe said, ‘but I’ve got to save those kids. If I don’t come up, get somebody.’ And he rushed into the water.” Delaney saved one of the boys. Two drowned. Delaney drowned, too. Joe Delaney died at the age of 24, with a wife and three young girls. LINK
Wow. What a great human being.

Happened at Critter's Creek in Monroe. Such a tragedy....

I was late learning to swim and I remember how scary the water was back then, so that makes the act that much more remarkable. It's one thing (and still heroic) if you are a decent swimmer, on a whole nother level when your own skills in the water are sketchy.

That man's son appears to be trying to make up for has father not taking advantage of his second chance, according to that video on the Chiefs website.

We used to go to Critter's Creek almost every weekend in the mid 80s, i remember them shutting the whole thing down for awhile

If I remember correctly, it was some kind of waste, runoff pond from the slides. It was surrounded by an 8ft fence. So these kids climbed a fence with Posted signs all over it and decided to go swimming in a waste pond. Smart.
This takes nothing away from Delany's heroic efforts.
This event was the main reason Critters Creek closed. I think.

Terrible tragedy. Going play golf at Chennault goat ranch made me think about that event when you drive past that closed down water park. I was only a kid when it happened, but I always thought about that shite.

Sad thing that haunts me in that I was playing golf that afternoon at Chenault. A trained lifeguard and quite able in those years I rue that I did not hear about it until leaving the course. Timing it from reports, I was near #11 when it happened, close enough (in my mind) to have helped had I heard. He was a great one.

Nah, he's a complete shithead to take a cheap shot like that at the guy.
The dude watched his brother drown and it clearly had a massive negative impact on him. Riley doesn't know what else he had to deal with in life either.
To wag a finger of disapproval at him in the middle of what should be nothing but a glowing piece on Delaney's selfless act is a trash POS move.
So you're standing up for a convicted drug dealer? Wow...

Two of my best friends were involved in a car accident in 1984. The car flipped over on it's top in a small bayou. You could see the tired still. Friend that was driving could not undo his seat belt due to the weight of his body against the buckle. My other friend got out and kept trying to go back under to free him but the driver kept grabbing at him and holding him.
He drowned, so it does not matter how good you may be able to swim you could get dragged down as well when one or more than one in this case is panicking. I remember this happening like it was yesterday.
