Anybody experience inner ear problems related to flying?

I fly regularly in planes and helicopters for work and vacation, and recently have noticed that my balance and vision are definitely off. Usually goes away within a couple days, but I'm still experiencing vision problems and balance issues after about 5 days. Anybody have this problem with flying? And any solutions other than waiting it out? It can be pretty damn miserable.

On one landing on a commercial flight, my ear started to hurt like a mofo. Guy next to me told me to chew some gum when we got on the ground. Felt like my ear drum was about to burst. Started chewing gum on the ground and it went away.

What kind of vision problems are you talking about?

This happens to me when I have a bit of sinus drainage. Hurts like a bastard too. I usually take some Sudafed about 30 minutes before takeoff and chew some gum. That usually helps with the pain and balance.

Only bad experience I had with inner ear problems with flying was on a 3 hour flight. The whole flight, I was never able to get my ears to pop. I was chewing gum from start to finish and was also trying to pop them and nothing would help. Pressure got so bad I started getting dizzy with vision problems and also my hearing was reduced to maybe 20%. Once we landed, I was finally able to get them to pop but when they did, it hurt so bad. Wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Get airplane earplugs!! I had an extremely painful earache once on a flight, and since then I've always worn my earplugs and chewed gum.

The pressure builds up in my ears on landing so much that it is painful and I can barely hear. I have used these ear pressure plugs and they help quite a bit.

Take some sinus medicine.

My ears really don't hurt at all. Vision and balance are the main issues. Vision is blurred and can't really focus on anything unless I strain and can only hold it for a few seconds.
I'm going to see optometrist this week for a checkup and if my symptoms haven't improved hopefully he can help me out if it's not my inner ear.

It happened to me and never went away. Thats how I found out I had meniere's. Go see an ENT tomorrow if you can. He should give you Valium to calm it down a bit.
I got referred to a neuro-otologist that diagnosed me. I had to do vestibular rehab and all kinds of testing. I know take a diuretic daily as well as Ativan and I do pretty good. I still get the vision problems especially around mirrors. I still fly but took a break for a bit. Use sudafed and nose spray and constantly try to equalize.

Could you go into a little more detail with your symptoms?

Mine started with being off balance and vision like yours. Like I had drank 12 beers without the fun. I was never really nauseous.

I really haven't had any ear pain though. I'm not sure if that would rule out meniere's?
I was thinking the best way to describe the feeling is like being drunk almost.
Thanks for the info

I never really had ear pain either. Although now I can tell that one gets sort of full.

It sounds like this has happened to you before but maybe it's progressing. Anyway you go online and find forums with stories similar. I found one that had airline pilots talking of similar symptoms. Its been almost 5 years for me so I don't remember any of names. If you give me an email I can write you in more detail tomorrow. But first thing in the AM get an ENT appt not your regular doc.

I've had middle ear problems, but no inner ear. That can be a bitch to deal with.

I've had the issue on landing before, but nothing chronic.

Your vision problems may be coincidental and not related to flying. An ophthalmologist rather than an optometrist would be best. Worse I have had was blocked ears for almost two months. Drove me batty. Saw an ENT and said if it didn't clear I would need tubes. Cleared up about a week after seeing him.
Just a nurse here, but don't think your vision problem is related to flying. Hope you are well soon.
