I wish I could've seen him play and I don't even like basketball.

His dad took almost all of the film on Pete when he was fired by LSU & not much has surfaced. But one of my all time favorite shots was when he lit up UGA for 40+ & was dribbling out the clock...pre shot clock days...putting on a dribbling exhibiton & ended up at half court with seconds to go. He dribbled to the far side of the court, chased by 2 dawgs, dribbed back across and as he approached the half court circle he turned sideways & unleashed a hook shot, never broke stride as it swished nothing but net & he ran off the court into the LSU locker room. The dawg fans went nuts.

Cant tell you how many times my dad and grand dad have told me this story.

When youtube came out and I was able to see some videos of highlights and I saw pete miss a shot I was perplexed. Like, "how the hell did he miss? this cant be pete. pete dont miss"

I generally could care less about basketball. That being said Pete is on a short list of athletes that I wish I could have seen play in person or even on TV.

Without having the three point shot! You could tack on 10 to 15 more points to his average with the three. Long Live the Best College Basketball Player Of All Time.

But seriously.... If only LSU had intergrated in the 60's. Imagine Pete, Elvin Hayes and Don Chaney on the same team.

Besides the " Big E " Hayes from Rayville and " Don the Duck " Cheney from Baton Rouge, the third starter for University of Houston was longtime Globetrotter from Monroe, Theodis Lee!!

They of course, broke UCLA's 2 year win streak in the " game of the century " played in the Astrodome

This, and no one else is even close. He and Casanova were my idols when I was a kid. I played on our high school basketball team and was the only melanin challenged player. We'd go to some nearly all black schools and they would chant "Pistol Pete" at me. It wasn't for my playing ability that's for sure.

This is SO TRUE.

This never (or rarely) gets mentioned when they discuss who was the greatest college basketball player of all-time.

Pete would have KILLED from behind the three-point-line and there is NO DOUBT he would have averaged 10-15 MORE points per game than the 44.2.

Sad to say but there was a dark side of The Pistol, too, one that not many knew about. His older brother, Ronnie, was the mgr at the old Tony Moran's Restaurant on the river, my best friend a bar tender there, so when a few of us would drop in for drinks, we'd spot Pete there on occasion. Every now & then, late after a home game, we'd see him sitting alone in the corner, a bottle of Jack Daniels as his friend & we'd watch him knock off the whole bottle in one setting. And then get up & play a NBA game the next nite.He most definitely wore his body out but the greatest LSU athlete I've seen in my 60+ yrs.

Looking at these stats never gets old. Holds NCAA career record for most points (3,667, 44.2 ppg, three-year career) in 83 games Holds NCAA career record for highest points per game average (44.2 ppg) Holds NCAA record for most field goals made (1,387) and attempted (3,166) Holds NCAA record for most free throws made (893) and attempted (1,152) Holds NCAA record for most games scoring at least 50 points (28)

Did you see the study Daddy Dale Brown did of every shot Pete took that if he had had the 3 point goal in college, just from the shots he took, he would have averaged over 50 points a game for his career????!!

Happy Birthday Pete.

Always a special guy to me.

Dad took me to see him play at cow palace a many times.

But in the preseason of his second season with the Jazz.
They played a preseason double header at the PMAC.
The only game I think he ever played in the building named after him.

It was the LSU purple/gold game and a Jazz vs Hawks preseason game.
After the game me and my buddy walked back to the dressing room in hope of getting Pete's autograph.
Suddenly Pete came out the dressing room and me and my buddy were the only one around. He was nice as could be and even talked with us for a bit. Then told us follow him as he lead us into the dressing room and introduced us to Elgin Baylor, telling me I need to get his autograph too.
Pete ended up introducing these two snotty nose 13 year old kids to half the team and Hot Rod Hundley who was the Jazz radio announcer.

A night I will always remember with a truly special person. Thanks Pete.

Pete's ongoing battle with alcoholism is well documented. He spoke of it himself as he made the great effort of cleaning up his act. Maybe you meant not many knew about it at the time.

Still, and will always be the NCAA's all-time leading scorer.

Can you imagine how many more points he would have scored with a 3 pt. line.

How did Dale Brown calculate his scoring total with a three point line if this is true?
