Words vary in meaning based on the context in which they are used. There is nothing wrong with the word "token" per se, but Rex used it to disparage Dr. Carson in a manner directly correlated with his race.

I see you're mincing your words very carefully. Why did you choose "directly correlated with" instead of "because of" in your sentence, except that you don't have a leg to stand on?
"Token" was meant to disparage YOU, not Mr. Carson because of his race.
