that's kind of iffy, really. All these guys have various sprains, contusions and pulled muscles (even the "healthy" players). It's hard to quantify how bad they are.
It doesn't have to be bad. I don't think there is anything wrong with putting a guy on IR who is expected to only miss a week or two. Sometimes, the demands of fielding maintaining a 53 man roster force you to put a guy on IR when otherwise you would not.

quote:Exactly. Let's say this preseason, Stills, Cooks, Meachem, Coleman and Toon all look great; and Colston is solid. Coleman gets a slight ankle twist in the last preseason game; you IR the kid. You figure Colston and Meachem are about done, so of the 6 WRs in camp this season, only 4 or 5 would be back next year. Why give one away to another team when you can stash him? As an undrafted free agent, he'd probably be happy to hang and practice a year, with a good offense. It would help his future career... and help the Saints too. And it's not like he was getting screwed, he'd still get a check.

Same concept if a rookie looks promising at center; if he tweaks an eyelash you stick him on IR. You figure he takes Goodwin's spot next year.
