Driving back to the office yesterday, two or three people who represent the cab industry were on one of the WWL talk shows. Basically, they oppose Uber on two fronts.
1) UberX haa unregulated drivers/cabs
2) It's not fair that Uber and their new technology are trying to displace/disrupt taxi cabs and their old technology, but if we give the taxi industry a few years, they will try to catch up.
As to the 1st point, I can understand wanting a regulated taxi industry with certified vehicles and drivers. However, considering what passes for a taxi and a taxi driver these days in the city, it's hard for me to believe that there is any actual current regulation/enforcement taking place.
2) Uhh... no. As it is... the insanely, insanely corrupt CPNC system in the city creates a monopoly. As any cable company customer can tell you, a monopoly ensures crappy, outdated service. Innovation is making a run at your business, cab drivers? I'm sorry... welcome to the rest of the world. Any sympathy I had for them went out the window when I heard that line.

Is Uber sketchy at all? I've never heard anything but really good things about it.
ETA: I read the other Uber thread. Looks cool to me
