2002 LSU Tigers

I was reading Wikipedia today about anything LSU football. I was looking at the bowl games LSU has been to in its history and the 2002 Cotton Bowl got me to thinking. When you watched that Cotton Bowl game against Texas did you give any thought to the possibility that we could win the National Championship the next year? Was there a hint of something special or did the National Championship surprise you?

Texas didn't beat LSU. Roy Williams singlehandedly beat LSU.

I think it surprised everyone. Not even LSU fans were thinking of national title possibilities until LSU beat Georgia in 03.

I remember watching that game and being awed by the talent of Roy Williams.

The entire 2002 season was meh....no one saw it coming.
the first game that I thought, "wow this is a different LSU than I've seen before" was actually @ Arizona for me. Zona wasn't good but it was a complete domination on the road of a BCS team

No, I didn't see it coming, but I thought we'd contend for the SEC title. Remember that we were around 9th in the first BCS poll and then Mauck broke his foot because of Saban keeping him in the game with a 29 point 4th quarter lead against Florida and called for a QB draw. That lead to us having to play Marcus Randall and finishing the season 3-4, one of those being the Bluegrass Miracle. With Mauck coming back healthy, along with basically that entire team returning in 2003, I expected us to be very good. Now, given we hadn't won a national title since 1958, no I don't think i expected that kind of success.

I think most fans would agree this was the launching point for LSU becoming a perennial national powerhouse. I recall my dad and I discussing after how that team had moxie that just wasn't common for a Tiger team. Had no idea that it'd lead to the success of the last decade, but it's been a great ride

I remember reading somewhere that Saban felt the real turning point that led to the success of 2003 was after the 21-20 loss vs. Arkansas in 2002 (TD pass from Matt Jones to DeCori Birmingham with about 10 seconds left in the game).
I'm going off memory and obviously paraphrasing (I'll try to find a link later), but he said it was the devastating feeling of that loss that sparked a shift in attitude/mindset that led to the National Championship.

Skyler Green's burst of speed at around 1:00 is incredible.
Houston Nutt and his teams at Arkansas had great energy. Those teams weren't the most talented but they were tough and good at that wild, backyard-ball style. And they always seemed to have a plethora of good running backs.

True, and scored first to take a 7-0 lead vs. Florida in 2003.
But to me, that's more about an attitude, not necessarily a guarantee.

2002 was a lost season.
If Mauck doesn't get hurt, we could have 3-peated as SEC champs.
Although UGA would have been tough to beat in Atlanta that year. But we were LSU.
