No boarding but the tank is pretty vulnerable in Halo 1. You can 3 shot Pistol somebody out of it pretty easily.

I didn't play much CE, but I remember this.

It wasn't a good offensive weapon in multiplayer. In single player it was unstoppable on the offensive. The trick in Multiplayer was to always be aiming backwards so that the turret blocked shots from the front.
