Engineeers of OB, let me pick your brain.

I need to build a device that is photocell triggered and 12 v battery operated to move a relatively light object (metal door) vertically down 10 to 12" and lock in that position until the photocell again triggers retracting the item to its original position and holding it there.
much like a garage door but on the scale of about 12" by 48" by 1/8" thick aluminum.
And I need to do so as cheaply as possible.

Ok, how fast does it need to be?
I would used 24vdc as it easer to get parts for. Used 2 12vdc batterys with solar charger and a photo cell to open.

Just thinking it through: You need a photocell relay with dry contacts that are capable of making/breaking on the full load amps of the motor. The photocell probably needs a separate power circuit (which can be from the same power source). Wire the motor up through the photocell relay contacts. It needs to have have a separate "up" and "down" start circuit with self contained motor starter. Use the normally closed contact on the "up" start circuit and the normally open contact on the "down" circuit.
Eta: you will probably need to specify the photocell come with normally open and closed contacts (some may only come with normally open contacts). Or you could use some inter posing relays to get around this.

As far as hooking the motor up to the door, you need a mechanical engineer for that shite.
Eta: Oops if the motor is 24vdc you'll power the motor itself (open & close), not a coil.
