Jesus, Zach. You aren't this dumb. There are buildings: homes, businesses, multistory office complexes that sit 10 feet inside the US. Are you proposing the federal government showing up and leveling these structures for your land mine field? A land mine field needs to be at least a few hundred yards wide, plus at least another hundred yards of demarcation zone. Not sure how you feel about this, but the federal government has overstepped their bounds enough already without seizing thousands of square miles of private property (any more than they already have).

The owners don't have free ranging live stock. If a squirrel sets of a land mine then I'm sure we won't have shortage of squirrels.
The desert is full of animals that aren't squirrels. Wild horses, burros, coyotes, massive jackrabbits the size of small dogs, etc., will trigger land mines around the clock. Replacing these mines will require exhaustive, extensive maintenance.
But hey- don't stop with just land mines. Why not use predator drones and AC-130 gun ships, too? Any time we get a visual confirmation of someone crossing the border, we can destroy them immediately with no trial, no due process or legal examination. Even US citizens, too. After all- there will be pictographs of people getting blown up.
And why stop there? How about if a cop sees you breaking the law, he gets to walk up to you from behind and run a .40 bullet through your skull. We can publish pictographs in advance and distribute them through pamphlets, PSAs and newspapers so we'll all know in advance of what can happen if we break the law.
You probably understand border security issues better than me anyhow. I guess my decade as a Border Patrol agent in Arizona didn't teach me much. Let's get those land mines deployed, stat.

Allow me to rephrase. Predator drones that aren't armed with Hellfire missiles.

One way or the other, the border has to be sealed. It's a national security issue. I propose using the military.

A stupid waste of money. I posted on this board 5 years ago the easiest and cheapest way to secure the border. Land mines. I have never heard an argument against land mining the border. If someone would like to try it here, I'll respond. It's an historically proven method of securing a border. You only have to make signs showing 'there are land mines here.'
Got my vote.

I would prefer to have no entitlement programs whatsoever and to have a free and open border.

This, I absolutely agree with. But proposing the instant killing of anyone that attempts to enter is an oversimplification of a huge problem and a violation of about half the Bill of Rights. It's one of those things that sounds good to say but when you peel back the layers it doesn't work in reality.
If you want to secure the border, remove the carrot. Deport 100% of the illegal aliens apprehended. Legally amend the Constitution to end the anchor baby practice. Stop preventing schools, hospitals and social programs from asking about citizenship and legal status before allowing benefits. Allow local law enforcement to work with immigration authorities in removing criminal aliens. If the federal government showed they were serious and sacked up even just 2% of the current illegal aliens in the US, they would begin self-deporting by the hundreds of thousands.
ETA: The general public doesn't realize this, but more prohibited items (drugs, guns, etc.) and hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens themselves enter the country right through our Ports of Entry. It's a numbers game. These CBP officers simply can't check every car, truck and pedestrian that enters the United States every day. Even if we tighten the border we can't close our borders to legal trade and commerce through the Ports of Entry.
