And for some people people it is a lot easier to lose weight.
Unfortunately obesity is a complex issue. There are multiple factors that contribute to weight gain and the ability for one to lose weight. Much of it can simply be boiled down to time and effort.
You also need to understand that not everyone was blessed with a great metabolism. If you were not, then you have to make smarter choices. This may also include more time spent exercising.
A lot of people give up on a workout plan because it is a time commitment that cuts in on a busy schedule. Furthermore, they may simply not enjoy exercising, even after losing weight. This often contributes to people gaining weight again after meeting their goals.
Eating healthier isn't always difficult, but sometimes it can take a lot of will power to fight through cravings and not feeling full. It is often better to eat things you crave in moderation while filling up on healthy choices.

Pretty much this. I have friends who are the same size they were in highschool, college, and now. One of them never exercies a day in his life (still doesn't) and throughout college he only drank coke (probably 3-4 cans a day) and ate Chef Boyardee like every day. Never gained a pound and still hasn't.
For me, it has always been a struggle. I put on weight easily and if I eat carbs, the pounds just pile on. Exercise is a must and so is portion control.
