I'm still trying to understand how the winner is decided has anything to do with it being called a sport.

What definition or derivation of the word sport specifies this?

That would be an "activity." I can run around my neighborhood for two hours but I wouldn't say I'm playing a sport.

Now if I raced my neighbor to the Stop Sign, that's a sport.
