The sheriff had locked down the jail, and disconnected its elevator. The Natl Guard was called in and on alert

Black leaders spoke to the sheriff and were assured there would be no lynching. When they returned to Greenwood they were called liars, and had guns pointed at them. Blacks then loaded up and went to the courthouse

On the morning of the riot, a white man was killed on the white side of the railroad tracks by a sniper.

Thats when all hell broke loose
