I have a friend that builds them. I played around and built a few with him over the years. It's not rocket science but it does take time. If you enjoy the pastime then go for it. There is something gratifying about catching a fish with a rod you made. If you think it will be a cost effective alternative to buying mass produced rods then think again. Like anything else buying in bulk affords the commercial guys much better pricing on blanks, guides, reel seats, etc.
