Yes it is derogatory, and has never been an acronym for anything.

This is always the worst excuse. Excusing your actions for other peoples actions.

Now I'm not saying I don't use the term, because I do, but this is the poorest excuse.

If it will make you feel better, in the spirit of the thread, I'll change the title of the post.

What do y'all prefer, police officer?

I don't actually care just wanted to point out the irony.

Good thread though

Cop came yesterday to take a report regarding my SUV which was broken into by some boys who are surely getting their lives together.

He was very nice.

man, you're really devoted to this cause I don''t think anyone considers it to be a derogatory term, if cops did, they wouldn't use it, because they are so hell bent on insisting to be called or referred to as officer

British English word "copper", which meant capturer. Also was a reference to their copper buttons on their uniforms.

Wow that does sound harsh, I hadn't realized.

Back in the day the ones mocking them were wearing silver, gold, platinum, and sometimes diamond encrusted buttons.

Now that I think about it, that still is the same people who mock officers these days. Just switch buttons with teeth.

I agree with you was just pointing out irony first, and then flaws in the logic of that excuse. Probably took it too far my bad.

I guess when you work in politics you try to be as politically correct as possible.

You are good people 777

I was once driving, not speeding in the slow lane of a 4 lane highway. Police was in the slow lane on the other side of the 4 lane. He sees my car and whips it through the median and chases me down at a high speed. Cat pulls me over and gives me a ticket for my window tint being to dark. What a dick. " I appreciate the he didn't kill anyone chasing me down to give me a window tint ticket they saw from 200 feet away"

Truly. But I sympathize more with those doing the mocking. How dare you walk around with a copper button. What is this? The Bronze Age?

You are missing the point of this thread. You need to add ",but obviously saved some lives that day." To the end of your post

that Jerry Waller murder was near where I live, what a travesty and a case of gross buffoonery, complete whitewash, in a sense the COPS got rewarded for it, as they got free paid vacation above their normal allotment

That is not accurate. COP was an acronym for constable on patrol. Most officers are not constables so the term does not fit but it is still, obviously, commonly accepted.

I appreciate cops so much I propose a special day for them. We could give them a picnic at the local dog pound and then afterward allow them to open fire on the poor creatures at the pound. win/win.
