The cost of living kinda scares the shite out of me, I'd be making good money as a professor at cal poly but not great money.

It's a fantastic little town. Lived in Monterey on a contract and visited SLO multiple times. My wife and I would love to raise our son in that area but it's very expensive.

According to a cost of living calculator, SLO has the same cost of living as Juneau, and I do fine here and am not wealthy by any means. Housing is the biggest problem. Everything else is reasonable.

I like living in California for the most part. I live in Alameda which is the East Bay of SF. The cost of living should scare you. If you make any less than 100K a year expect to be "poor" by southern standards. You will not be able to afford a home here and expect to pay very high rents. All that being said, the weather is wonderful, the population is diverse, the countryside is unbelievably beautiful, the produce is amazing and cheap, and there is always something going on within a short drive.
