trail runners like them because it allows them to not worry about rocks and whatnot like other 0 drop shoes with less cushioning
i run trails with lots of jagged, pointy rocks and haven't had any issues with my altra lone peaks, which are zero drop.
i've tried on and test run the hoka's and they felt odd. i've been running in minimalist shoes for the last few years and missed the "feedback" from the road or trail.
if memory serves, hoka's were originally designed for ultra trail runners.
as far as my stable of shoes goes...
saucony kinvara 3 (all purpose)
saucony kinvara 4 (all purpose)
brooks pure flow (shorter runs/races)
newton gravity (all purpose)
pearl izumi em n2 (long, slow runs)
altra lone peaks (trail)

yeah it doesn't bother me either, but I've read plenty of reviews from trail runners about Hoka's and they talk about not having to worry so much about foot placement and just bombing down hills and whatnot
