it isn't his entire problem, but if the costs of education were more appropriately aligned then people could have had the same options as the did in the past.

In other words, as a young students for the most part you listen to your parents and advisers who went through school at a time when you actually could just go and get a degree for the most part and find a good job, often not even in your direct field, with just the paper that says graduate.

However today, due to the costs of education to the student which are rising at a level not commensurate with the costs of the universities to provide said education, you need a high paying job pay it off, and due to the competition you now need to be more specialized so the advice many receive from advisers and parents is no longer applicable. I am sure most are starting to advise different (at least I hope so) but there is a small generation that missed the gap which when coupled with the recession and resultant older people occupying entry level positions makes it very difficult for some to get out from under the high costs of the student loans.

is it the students fault? yes in the end it is all on the student. However the problem is also due in part to the actions of university's (generally speaking) and lenders

No, his problem is he's a narcissist that thinks he's above everything that has been offered to him so far. Could he really not find an unpaid internship and work his way up from there into the company? Instead of going that route, he's gone 2 years without a job, and now he's probably fricked for life. You just don't have a 2 year gap in your resume and get away with it. A year gap where you're off backpacking in Europe, ok, but living in your parents home doing nothing but interviewing, there is something clearly wrong with you. I would never hire a person who had a 2 year gap on their resume unless they were hospitalized or were bettering themselves like learning a foreign language. Sitting on your arse and applying everyday on Indeed is not effective means of using your time wisely.
