i went with the barclays arrival. it's 2X points on every purchase no matter what the purchase is, and you can redeem the points on just about any airline, hotel, rental car, etc...as long as the purchase is considered to be for travel. there are other nice perks like the 40k points bonus and a 10% redemption bonus. this card worked for me b/c 1.) i'm not a frequent flier on a certain airline nor am i loyal to one in particular and 2.) often my vacations will consist of a long road trip and a hotel stay, so being able to redeem for hotels and rental cars as well as airlines was a major selling point.
i just got the barclays card as well, and for basically the same reasons as you
its a decent travel card, but doesnt get you much in the way of flights and benefits like companions and checked bags, but we don't fly very often anyway

Southwest card that gives you 50,000 points.
Wife and I flew to Niagara and stayed 1 night at a hotel on those points. I think it had a $95 annual fee, well worth it.
Hilton card also gave me 50,000 points which is about enough for 1 free night at a nice place, maybe two at a lower tier place. Had no annual fee.
Both cards required i spend i think $1000 dollars before the points were added. I paid daycare for a month instead of with a check and that covered that, canceled the cards after using the points.
I'm going to do it again with both of them in my wife's name.

Your post raises a good point. There is generally a minimum spend for rewards credit cards to get the bonus.
Either you have to have the spending to support this or you have to be able to manufacture spending to get the bonus.

Which card has the 24month interest free? Is that on transfers?
I don't care much about rewards, I just want to switch my balance from Bank Of America to something with 0 interest for a long while so I can attempt to pay it off. Anyone suggest something for this? I don't mind paying small annual fee.
Do most places take the Discover It card? What about Chase Slate? 0% on purchases and transfers for 15 months, no annual fee.

foshizzle got the 24 month card. I can't remember which one it is. The ones I see listed on the credit card sites max at 18 months (which still doesn't suck).
