Ah yeah, forgot about the research, but why wouldn't they let you do it with a bachelor's or master's degree and experience?

A PhD teaches you how to do hypothesis-driven research. Those just aren't the skills you learn from a BS degree or field work. Plus, you are the world's expert on a subject when you receive a PhD and are sometimes hired to continue working on that subject.
