Does a caterpillar "spit" out its coccon or does it "poo" it out?

We've collected a couple caterpillars in the yard and put them in a jars with the branches they were eating in hopes that we could teach the kids ( and ourselves) a little bit about nature by watching them make their chrysalis' and then become butterflies. I believe we have the caterpillars of the Gulf Fritilary (sp?) butterfly.

I googled it. Took me 5 seconds

Caterpillars make their cocoons from strands of silk that they produce from glands near their mouths.

Ah! The age old "lets put a stick and a leaf in a jar and it'll be just like home!"

When I was little, my caterpillars-in-a-jar always made cocoons but never came out.
