it has been mentioned already in this thread - that ghost cannot touch iron either.. I just looked it up, and iron affects demons in most supernatural mythos as well. Iron is considered "a pure metal" so it can repel evil.
In mythology:
Nailing an iron horseshoe to a door was said to repel evil spirits or later, to bring good luck.
Surrounding a cemetery with an iron fence was thought to contain the souls of the dead.
Burying an iron knife under the entrance to one's home was alleged to keep witches from entering.
ETA: So if they were to "bust down the walls" .. well.. they just wouldn't be able to, because houses are filled with iron in the walls via nails, pipes, etc.

Never ever been mentioned before in the show, and they could still break down the walls without touching iron
