If he isn't involved in scouting, wouldn't he be fixing OTHER people's mistakes?
Posted on 4/22/14 at 8:31 pm to bonethug0108
He's a GM.
He should do it all.
He's cost us wins and rings.
We need that other guy but you just can't see it.

He has NEVER held a title that involved scouting and has zero background in it. He was hired because he knows numbers and rose up through the ranks because he knows them very well, as well as being a VERY shrewd negotiator.
I know what his backround is. But you said he has NEVER been involved in scouting.
Certainly he was involved after Randy Mueller left. Fact

He fixes his mistakes.
We got screwed on Smith because his contract was prior to the new CBA when the cap was ballooning and we could easily fit him under. When the new CBA went into affect it threw things out of whack for us and we navigated that as best as we could.
Harper's contract was a mistake in hindsight, but it was definitely because the coaching staff was pushing to keep him and at the time he was coming off of a really good year. You don't have the ability to see into the future when negotiating contracts.
There hasn't been much else that we totally fricked up on. Can you list more of these mistakes you speak of?

I tried to help you.
Good luck good night

But you said he has NEVER been involved in scouting.
Yes he is involved in hiring scouts, which is not what I meant when I said never.
He doesn't do any of the scouting stuff as far as actually evaluating a player's football talent. That's what I mean. I've seen nothing to ever suggest he was and everything to suggest he wasn't.
You come up with all of these false arguments and present no facts to back them up while dodging any fact anyone else brings up. Please elaborate on your points. Any of them. At least one of them.

I can go to sleep tonight knowing that bones is up fighting the good fight.

meant as a college talent evaluator. He's iffy at best at projecting where guys will go and how good they'll do.
He knows college(I'll put this here as a disclaimer this time: to a point as far as someone on the outside looking in) but I don't think he knows NFL for jack outside of what people tell him or what players did 5 years ago(like everyone thinking we lost something by cutting Smith ). That includes where players will go and how they will do.
So when I said legit I meant as far as evaluating their college careers and projecting a range for the players' talents.
Oh Ok my bad I misread what you had said. I totally agree.

So over his time as GM, has he done more than just been a "bean counter"?
If you say yes, then you should never have said he has always just been on the finance side.
If you say no, then you are wrong.
I'm not twisting shite.

No biggie.
And I'm not going to fight this fight if he isn't ever going to pull out a sword and instead try to keep slapping me with his sissy glove.
Come out with some real facts. Links. First hand accounts. An argument that actually backs up any claim. Anything.

Jason David, Charles Grant among others on the free agent/re-signing side.
as far as drafts, too many draft picks to list.

I said he came up on the finance side and as a negotiator. I never said he NEVER did anything else.
I did say he was NEVER involved in actually evaluating a player's football skills.
Yes he hires people for that, but doesn't do it himself.
Again, you are twisting things to try and trap me and say aha. I word something wrong or don't elaborate enough and you think you "win" something. This isn't about winning an argument.
If you want to have a discussion please provide some facts to your claim good sir.

So you list one bad FA and one bad resigning to go with my 2, which all 3 came after the players had good years prior.
David was a WTF decision by the coaching staff. You bring a guy in that doesn't fit your scheme. Either that or there was a lack of communication between Loomis and the coaches. I find that hard to believe with everything that's been said about how he and Payton have a plan, a checklist of sorts, every year and they usually hit everything or close to it.
As far as the draft, name me a team that has done far better? I can name you 15 teams that have done worse.
Look I'll give you a really good one: Spags. That was a huge miscalculation but again it came in a year where Payton couldn't have an influence over how things played out, and Loomis himself was gone the first half of that year.

Im not twisting anything, I can only go off of what you say. Which was he has never been on the scouting side, but has always been just a finance guy. Either back up what you say, or stop trying to paint me as someone that is twisting your words.

Well, I know over 4 seasons 2002-2005, pre Payton, he absolutely pulled every string as a GM. Sure you can contend Payton has a lot more say than Haslett did, but for those 4 years it was all Loomis. Thus making your claim that he has always just been a finance guy completely FALSE. Of course you probably started following the team in 09, thus never even realizing how shitty of a GM he was in the years pre Payton.

You should sign Lester Earl to a contract in your fake wrestling league. Would be a great heel

I could name a few. But i always conceded Loomis to be a middle of the road GM. So yea, the 15 area is probably spot on. People think he is a top 5 guy, or even a top 10 guy. He's 1 dimensional. Yes, he's had a few bright spots there, but there are GM's that handle booth. And having an eye for talent is far more important, because you don't have to continually fill holes by spending in free agency.
The same way you can hire scouts, you can hire guys to manipulate the money. What he does works, but it's not like it is unprecedented.

That's why we have the term of "looks like a Haslett pick".
And we did alright in the drafts under Loomis even when Haslett was coach.
Grant(before the second contract), Bentley, Stinchcomb, Holland, Smith, Henderson, Karney, and Jammal Brown in 4 drafts. Stallworth also had his moments.
