Reliance on technology isn't the problem, it's more about reliance on economic efficiencies like Just In Time inventory management, and the economies of scale that get realized by centralizing production of products. Those are economic choices we have made, not technological ones. You hear the old timers talk about the days when everyone did a little home gardening and it was typically done as a way to save money and help make ends meet. I can tell you that I've spent far more on gardening as a hobby than I would have on the retail value of the comparable produce it has yielded. It'd be nice if everyone still had home gardens, but it's just not feasible for economic reasons, not technological ones.
