if Howland is their guy there is a good chance he will come after McCray.

Likewise if they hire donnie tyndall i wonder if he'll go after butch pierre. John brady coaching tree FTW

Well, there were many here who think Jones needs a "x's and o's" coach on the bench. Charlie Leonard isn't going anywhere, and neither is Patrick as long as LSU still wants Ben Simmons. So if Jones wants that coveted bench coach then McCray would have to be the odd man out. FWIW, if McCray were to leave, Jones would just go out and get another "recruiter".

Also, serious question, who besides Patterson has McCray brought or may bring to LSU?

I wouldnt be opposed to bringing in a guy like mike sanders. Would hate to lose mccray though. We'll see how this plays out.

He has Georgia ties, but I don't think he was on staff yet when we got Quarteman.

Yeah, I don't think it takes an "X's and O's specialist" to get guys to buy into a team defense philosophy.

Look at McCray's twitter feed people. He could be gone. I'd love to see the old white guy (aka Leonard) gone but that's Johnny's boy so not happening. Might cost him in the long run.

I am one who believes he needs and X and O guy. I've heard him at clinics, watched closely... LSU really lacks in the half court. He needs to hire someone he trusts and let them give this team a direction unless he will do it. We run run run sometimes then walk it up others. No consistency.

The one thing he does is work with post players. And while JOB improved in the post, it's all old school. I feel the game has passed him in that area. All based on slow read and react moves. Watch Ben Simmons in HS in the post and you see he reads players as he catches. Able to slide one foot to open lanes for passing. LSU post players catch, feel, then react which is way too late in this game (especially in the athletic SEC).

Our offensive efficiency was in the top few of the SEC all year... Our defense blew. People should be calling for a defensive specialist before an "X's and O's guy". I don't even know what that shite means. There were plays. We got open shots. Sometimes we missed them, but it wasn't due to bad plays or playcalling.

I have grown to hate that term more than anything else. It just isn't the biggest need at all. Not even close.

Watch the sets, nothing special to them. We struggled against a zone for a good bit of the season. We need an identity on offense more than anything. Maybe as a team. Year one he came in promising up-tempo pressing style. The excuse was he didn't have the players. This year he did and well, we saw less of it. Maybe with JOB gone something changes but I am not so optimistic with this one.

People say x's and o's because they don't know what to say. Same goes for radio shows, callers and hosts.

McCray needs to be gone. He doesn't bring much to the table. DP is our best recruiter for sure.

Disagree completely. Need to do some research. Not only does he have deep ties in the upper echelon of AAU and SE USA, he's designed workouts for some of the top NBA players. He brings high level recruiting (may not have paid off yet) and player development. He's much more valuable to LSU than Leonard is.

Having bigger guards will change that...better production and better drivers. As long as Gray, Hornsby and TQ are solid from the outside we will hardly see any zone at all.

Like everyone else is saying, we need an assistant who is a good defensive coach...would love to somehow get Mike Dunlap, but thats probably a pipe dream.

Wait...defense isn't included in X's and O's?

Having big guards might help... TQ won't ever be a shooter from outside. Hornsby can shoot but he is smaller than Malik. Gray isn't a big guard by any stretch and shot just over 30% from three point range this past season.

It isn't like tomorrow we have 3 6'5 guards on the roster. We have one right now (including guys coming in) and he is one of the worst offensive players in the nation. He ranked in the 8 percentile on offense. Not sure where the big guards mantra is coming from.

No, Xs and Os are not paramount in our defensive problems. Effort and technique are the larger issues.
