re: Braves fans: Would getting a leadoff hitter help this team tremendously?

Is it even possible to send BJ down?
I don't know. There was talk about it last year.

He's been turning the corner a bit the past few games and seems to be seeing the ball a little better. Hell he actually had 2 walks last night and he didn't even strike out!
True. But if he's still fluttering around .180-.200 around Mid-May I wouldn't be completely heartbroken if the Braves explored other options.

I think they would trot out Pena/Schafer before they explore outside options, but I agree that he's on an extremely short leash.

Yes, absolutely.
Heyward is a good leadoff, but his power is also very wasted there. I remember one year Alfonso Soriano hit over 45 homers at the leadoff spot and still didn't get 100 RBI's. What an absolute waste of production.
I think Simmons has a really good chance to be that guy, especially with how he's looking so far. I also think the braves should make some small moves before the deadline.

It's impossible to add averages together like you did in baseball. Fix it and you should get much better responses. Unfortunately, I can't talk to you about stats because you're doing it wrong. Good day.

I know. But the point still stands that the 1st 2 spots in the lineup have been pretty bad.

I have no doubt. I just wish they wouldn't piddle around with him. Maybe they're afraid of Jupton becoming butthurt about his brother if BJ lost his job.

Would we be any better than 9-4 with a different lead off hitter? Probably not. We're only 13 games in and you've started how many threads on Heyward? It's gonna be a long year for you
Posted on 4/15/14 at 8:35 am to Moustache
I believe he has an option left but with his service time has the right to refuse it

THIS. It's a waste of value.

I highly doubt it. Simmons just doesn't have the patience as a hitter and has a pop up rate that is way too high to be an effective leadoff. Not to mention, his best BA comes from when he's batting down in the order instead of at the top.

There's your answer. Being 9-4 right now is too small a sample to say we're postseason bound. I'm simply saying based on projections that Heyward would create a lot more value from the 2 spot.

1.
This thread is more about not having a leadoff than it is about Heyward. Heyward can leadoff, but I feel it's cheating him of his possible value. He could become an incredible value batting from the 2 hole with a competent leadoff hitter.
Some of you guys have the emotional stability of a woman. Instead of looking at it logically and seeing that I'm not actually bashing Heyward, you automatically scream in your head, "frick HIM HE DIDNT SAY BARVES and HEWYARD BEST EVARRR#11111, SO frick HIM!"
Just like in my other thread about extending him. I didn't say he wasn't worth extending. I said he probably isn't worth extending at the money he wants. Huge difference. But let the estrogen flow through you anyway.

I'm not mad I just found it funny because I've literally never seen you post about the Braves up until these two threads

Eh, I usually don't post in the game threads, but I've always posted here about baseball for many more years than you've decided to migrate from the SECrant.

Fair enough to be fair I posted on TD before SECr, just happen to be an Auburn guy. Glad you're a veteran though
On the topic, I don't think it's worth going outside to find a lead off guy at the price it'd cost at this point. If you can go 6-4 or better on average over 10 game spans with mediocre lead off hitting then just let it be until the deadline and market becomes more clear.

Yeah cuz the Braves sucked so bad with JHey leading off last year.
Oh wait...

Not the best place to get a 1st impression of LSU fan.

Ohhh, I'm not saying to do it now. I'm saying come June or so and BJ is still being BJ, it'd be worth exploring Ichiro, Aoki if the Royals suck, etc. You know, guys who are FA next year that we wouldn't be obligated to. I really like Aoki. If the Royals are out of contention (not likely) I'm pretty sure they'd give him up for not very much more than Cody martin, which I'd be completely okay with. But since I think the Royals will contend, I think Ichiro is our best shot if we go that route.
A dream would be Charlie blackmon, but I'm not so sure the Rox would give him up.

Yeah, cuz the Braves also had great post-season success and surely you shouldn't want to improve yourself.
Statistically, with a good, not great leadoff in front of Heyward and Freeman batting 3rd to protect him, Heyward's value would skyrocket.
Posted on 4/15/14 at 9:05 am to Moustache
Whats your fixation on ichiro? Dude didn't even post a .300 obp last year
Posted on 4/15/14 at 9:07 am to Moustache
BJ has made some nice adjustments in the last three games.
He has 15 plate appearances, reached base safely six times, smacked a homer and stolen two bases. Additionally, he only has one strikeout.

+1
I'd like to see either this...
1 - Simmons
2 - Heyward
3 - Upton
4 - Freeman
or this.
1 - Shafer/?
2 - Simmons
3 - Freeman
4 - Upton
5 - Heyward
I think if we can find a average to solid leadoff hitter, it would make our offense a lot better. I would like to get the Astros on the phone and see what they'd sell Altuve for.
