I understand that, but Avilan under no circumstances deserves or should be given a W for that performance. A rules a rule, but just dumb and not logical in this case

That's not the entire rule. The scorer could have given the win to Carpenter if they wanted to, instead of Avilan, but probably didn't because Carpenter got the Save.

Rule 10.17(c)

quote:

(c) The official scorer shall not credit as the winning pitcher a relief pitcher who is ineffective in a brief appearance, when at least one succeeding relief pitcher pitches effectively in helping his team maintain its lead. In such a case, the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the succeeding relief pitcher who was most effective, in the judgment of the official scorer.

Problem was, in this case, the only succeeding RP got the save, and you can't get a save AND a win. I honestly don't know if they can choose to give Carpenter the W rather than the SV in this case.

ETA: I remember sometime in the last few years a reliever getting shelled, then their team taking the lead back and ending up holding on to it, and the scorer gave a subsequent reliever the W for throwing a few scoreless innings.
