What happened, simply, is that the government didn't want anybody to get hurt over a cow issue. The government was not so much impressed with the arms against them but with the stupidity and irresponsibility of the people carrying those arms.

I guess Clinton and Reno had more balls than Obama and Holder. Ruby Ridge and Waco come to mind.
