I mind giving up outs in the first inning when you have a leadoff guy on and have the top of the lineup up.

Laird should be the only in the top of the lineup to bunt early.

I'm not against giving up an out to score a run (safety/suicide squeeze), but why can't Mainieri teach his left-handed hitter to pull the ball with 0 outs and a runner at 2B? You know, it's possible that Laird could bounce a ball through the hole and we could have runners at 1st and 3rd, or possibly even a RBI single.
