I agree with your assessment Spank. If you are government or plant the PE is typically not needed but a good thing to have. The PE is needed for consulting. If you are going the private sector you will not go far without a PE. Typically it is more important for Civils but EE and ME need it to in certain situations. I'm in a small firm and we have one EE PE. I used to work for a 400 person firm that had one EE PE and tons of Civils.

As to the OP about cramming for the test, WHY? I assume you can still bring in all of your books. I took it the first time it went to multiple choice. I did not realize it was multiple choice until about two months out. I thought it was going to be the 8 question format with partial credit. What you have to realize is you have 80 questions per 4 hour session. If you do the math not enough time for in depth questions. Granted some will take longer than others but your not doing Dif Eq. Pick out the most important 10 books and bring them. I brought 13 used 6 and wish I would have brought one I left at home. Some guys brought in 3 bankers boxes of books and I thought to myself, you won't have time to go through that many books. A lot of the environmental questions where just that questions. Find the key word look in the glossary, go to that page and read a paragraph or two and get the answer.

I passed the first time and had 20 hours of study time max. Full disclosure it took me 2 try's to pass the FE.
