There should be a "court date" listed on the ticket. That is the date that you have to enter your plea by. You need to go to the parish courthouse, enter your plea of not guilty, then you'll be assigned a court date to which you'll see a magistrate. That's when you'll contest your ticket. Good luck though, depending on the violation, your success rate may not be so high.

Can I enter a plea before the court date? Or am I required to show up on that date to enter plea?

Either way, it's not a problem for me to go. I just want to follow the proper protocol.

You should be able to go before the court date to enter your plea. Here where I'm at, you don't even see a judge on the court date on the ticket, you go see a court clerk who sits at a bank teller style window, tell him/her what your plea is, and they give you a court date to see the judge if you plead not guilty.
