How many kids do you have?
Having kids doesn't give you some kind of super clairvoyance on parenting. If it did, there would be no bad parents.
Do I know exactly how I would respond to that situation, no. But it doesn't take a genius to evaluate what my reaction would be. I certainly wouldn't let them finish the shower while I waited on the couch, and I definitely wouldn't have smacked the kid around.
Would people be supporting this guys actions if it had been his stepson with his girlfriend instead of stepdaughter with her boyfriend, and the stepdad had smacked the girlfriend around?
Something tells me no, even though it's the same circumstances.

Additionally, having kids or not having kids has no bearing on whether it is illegal for a grown man to beat up a minor teen.
It doesn't matter what you would have done or how you would have reacted. This guy broke the law and will be prosecuted for doing so. The teen's parents will (rightfully) sue and win damages against him.

Nothing close to the same circumstances. Not even in the same area code.
