I really can't think of anything to add that would be better than what you already have.

Yeah braid. Put some braid on a spinning reel and you will cast longer by 10-15%. Of course then use about 20-24 inches of fluorocarbon shock leader. The newer, better quality spinning outfits are made for braid.

I really just want a new/lighter rod, but then I will have an extra...........so naturally I have to get a reel for it
