I passed through it on the way to West Yellowstone a few years back, but I didn't pay much attention to the city itself. If I rememebr correctly is it somewhat in a valley/plain but with mountain ranges in virtually every direction. Absolutely beatiful country though. I rememeber driving south along the Galatin River, seeing a moose standing on a little island in the middle fo the river and a little later an eagle or hawk flying along the bank as well.
It is a wonderful location just 30 minutes or so from Yellowstone and a half day's drive to Glacier. Also easy access to Boise, Salt Lake and really not that bad of a drive (maybe a day) to Seattle.
I think the downside would be the winter weather. I rememeber that even the interstates have ways to be closed, and from boseman once the snows move in I don't think there is an easy way to get to Jackson Hole, even if you could go interstate via Idaho Falls you might still have closures getting back into Wyoming. When I was there it snowed the week before Memorial Day, and in parts of Montana spring, summer and fall are pretty well compressed to June - August or mid September.
