This might be an outdoor question but I figured I'd try here first. Looking to buy a lab this spring and trying to find a breeder in Louisiana...preferably SW Louisiana, but in state would be fine. Not a hunter...this would be just a family pet.

What are the benefits of AKC registration?

What is the typical cost of a puppy these days?

Open to any coat color, but do prefer the lighter colored yellow labs.

Anyone deal with a breeder they rally like? I've Goggled a bit but you have no idea who you're dealing with that way, and all of the sites look like they were built in 1997.

Thanks in advance...

I know a guy in Deridder who breeds them. I got my old chocolate lab from him and was one of the best dogs I ever owned, until the sorry arse neighbors decided to poison him . Anyways, I'll see for his number when I get home. He hunts them a lot if that matters.

Adopt one from a shelter if its just going to be a family pet.

Adopt, do not breed. Most of these "breeds" are a product of incest somewhere down the line. There are plenty of awesome dogs/puppies that would make a great family dog and have less health problems that are considered mutts. Also, think about the lesson it would teach your kids to rescue something instead of paying hard earned money for a dog that is created in the same concept of Hitler's Aryan race. Just my 2 cents.

Honestly, just find a breeder and drop $350 on a dog. You don't need anything special, and to be honest, champion bloodline doesn't mean shite on how a dog will act

Some breeders will guarantee you money back if your dog gets shite like messed up eyes or hip dysplasia

I don't know how it is with Labs since they are so common, but when I was looking for my Blue Heeler, I just looked through the Classifieds of various papers, craigslist, and various puppy finder websites. When I found a promising ad, I would contact the person with questions and make a visit out to view the puppies to see how they were being taken care of.

I ended up spending $150 and have had no problems in the two years I've had my dog. I have no papers on the dog, but I had no plans to breed or compete.

If you are not hunting or showing just get one out of the newspaper.
