All three major candidates in the Republican primary, Akin, Steelman and Brunner had support from different wings of the Tea Party. None were actual RNC or "establishment" candidates.

Brunner had the endorsement of FreedomWorks, Steelman had the endorsement of the Tea Party Express and Sarah Palin, and Akin, who himself was a member of the Tea Party Caucus in the House, had the endorsements of fellow Caucus members Michelle Bachmann and Steve King.
