Previous standards were called grade level expectations and focused on what material to cover. In fact in Louisiana the grade level expectations for social studies and science are still in force and the common core literacy standards are to be addressed in addition to the grade level expectations.
The new standards focus on a students ability to use various texts and various authors to examine the different perspectives of the same events
