In particular, Richard Todd (who played Major Howard) - was a captain in the parachute infantry, and linked up with Todd at the bridge in the real battle. So, when he (Todd, as Howard) delivers the line, "..the Paras are always late" - he's talking about himself, in the most literal sense possible.
