Boykin spaniel.
This is the breed I was thinking of when he said slightly smaller than a lab.
Sucks those Labkins aren't still available.
Anyone have updates on their labkin? I'm curious to see what they look like as adults.

Beagles are great family dog. My wife and I have had one for 2.5yrs. I don't have any problems with mine barking only thing is he doesn't always want to come because he's on a scent. Nothing tritronics cant fix though

Unless the dog is coming in at night consistently, a lot of these breeds become a pain.
What about a boston terrier or cocker spaniel?
We have two american bulldogs, they bark when outside and guard the door when inside...as long as no one knocks, they're quiet.
Also...they dont mind being stepped on, crawled on, or having their ears pulled.
A lot of small dogs bite when those things happen.

Mine is Bourre, 35ish pounds and a hellion. The most hyper dog I have ever been around. I'm 6'2" and he can get all 4 paws to my shoulders when he jumps. Unbelievable athleticism.
He is super sweet, loves to retrieve and swims like a maniac. He also eats EVERYTHING he can. Grass, mud, pecans, sticks, plants, trees, any type of food item, etc... but wants nothing to do with chew toys. Smh...
Thats him comong back on a retrieve. Lemme see if I can find another pictfure of him.

Boykin spaniel. Check out my sig image below. Females top out at 35#, males at a little over 40#. Sweet dogs, good demeanor, smart and playful.
Beautiful dog. Would they do well in your typical subdivision backyard? Are they good with kids. This is for my 3yr old daughter. Where could I get a dog like this?

Yes to all of the above. It'll need exercise but any dog will. They are fine around kids. Mine tolerates kids at the park walking up to her and petting her as well as my tugging on her ears/rough housing. And we constantly get compliments on her. Where are you located? We got ours in Arkansas and I can send you their contact info if you want. My e-mail is:
