Grade Johnny Jones' 2013-2014 season

I'd say a C- or D+
One of the most frustrating years of LSU basketball because the team obviously had some talent, never improved, or played consistently. The game management, specifically the use of timeouts and his sometimes idiotic substitution patterns are maddening. The defensive lack of fundamentals and poor free throw shooting continued to plague this team all year. The inability to develop and teach how to handle a double team when you knew it was coming every night is something I don't understand.
Amazed that LSU will likely not even make the NIT...Johnny has to be embarassed with his performance this year. He has put a lot of doubt in LSU bball fans (or more specifically this fan) that he is the person to get LSU back to a top 20 program.

C- never figured out how to stop dribble penetration or use Jarrell Martin inside. Johnny seldomly looked for open shooters when getting doubled.
Next year will be telling.

C-, i grade it low as well, no matter what happens next season, he'll get to the end of Ben Simmons time to do something

D. While I think the talent on the team was a bit overrated it was good enough to finish above .500 in the awful SEC

F if he doesn't make nit. They say we need a bench x n os coach.. Then why did we hire jj?

D
I said LSU can do better when they hired him, but I was willing to give him a shot because he was an LSU alum and this was his dream job. But I am done. He has recruited well. Although some of the guys were overrated. His in game coaching is down right horrible. Game in and game out leaving JOB on the bench with foul trouble all the while seeing a close game turn into a blowout is mind boggling.

Solid C. Temper your expectations a bit. Just two years ago we were bottom of the barrel in the SEC. I think we'll get there, just taking a longer than most people want.

C is about right. For all the talent LSU had this year, the personnel just wasn't there. Having 2 sub 6'0'' guards was a huge bane for the tigers and the length they didn't provide on the perimeter was killer. It's hard to say we lost any games because our frontcourt sucked because Mickey and JOB played well all season. This team missed Carmouche dearly, hopefully next season brings a more balanced attack.
I don't put this season on JJ, he just didn't have the best personnel out there this year. They were severley lacking in the backcourt and that's not something you "fix" in a year

The team finished with 10 SEC wins against 10 SEC losses. This includes SEC tourney. The team was 7th in league standings in the end. There are 14 SEC teams. So Johnny's team was average in the SEC.
Last year had similar results in a weakened conference.
The team underachieved IMO. I will give Johnny a grade of
C- . This team was inspired some nights playing at home but took nights off on the road. The preparation by the coach seemed insufficient.
Give JJ 2 more seasons to get to the DANCE or else it will be time for a come to JESUS intervention concerning the Men's basketball Program. By then, Alleva will need to get serious about hiring the best that LSU can afford. If LSU is not serious about building a consistent competitive program, then I am serious about not going to the PMAC anymore. !!!!!!!

fwiw last year going strictly by in season coaching I thought he was around a B or B+ because the team played way over its talent level.
This year he is lucky if it is a D-. The team played well early and looked like it could be something special but it has been hot and cold since the fricking rhode island game. I felt like we never played basketball that fit our style outside of the uk game and arky game in the pmac once sec play started. I disliked the lack of press leading up to sec play, and I don't think he used the players in the correct places for the press.
He struggled big time with sub patterns and pulling players when they should be pulled for bad decisions and coaching them up. instead we got lazy bad d all year, extremely retarded turnovers all year and just general bad play at times. Our offense was actually ok despite becoming stagnate at times, I think we would have been better had he stressed to hickey and stringer and others to attack the rim and then have players space correctly. The lack of attention to free throws cost us in the uk game at rupp and our road effort was down right disgusting at uga and ole miss.
I also felt like he had way more emotion last year than this year. He almost appeared disinterested at times during games. Jones needs to work on working refs because the never defended our players this year. It was like he was scared to get a technical foul.
I felt like UAB, UK, arky, and at UK were his best games this year coaching wise and we played our best. I know the man can recruit but right now he is averaging a C in 2 years. Yes, trent Johnson sucked horribly and killed our roster but jones fixed that pretty quick but then didn't live up to the hype once the talent got here. I do think some of it falls on players like Martin taking time to come around, TQ playing terrible, Odo and Malone both being worse than Tuba, Morgan not playing all that well before being injured. However, I also think some of that was putting the guys in the wrong spots.
I'm sure as next season approaches ill be back behind jones but for now I'm questioning his abilities to actually coach. He needs to bring the fire he has off the court and had last season to the court again

Thanks for giving him a shot. But I am happy that you're done. So this means you be in anymore basketball threads?
Good.
Oh and frick off

D. Absolutely no way LSU should have the same SEC record as last year
Posted on 3/15/14 at 12:32 am to LSU713
If we are rating specifically on his performance from the first tip to now (i.e., not recruiting), I'd give him a D. Much of what the OP said, I am in agreement with. For a team with this talent to potentially miss the NIT is an embarrassment. The lack of improvement on the team and, most of all, the defensive gameplan was very bad.
I don't think there is an argument against Jones doing an extremely poor job with this team. All LSU fans should be disappointed with his performance this year.
With all of this said, I do believe in giving coaches some time at a school. I would give him a poor eval as the AD but he would not be on the hot seat (his excellent recruiting being a big reason). I'd want to see a better performance from him next year (not necessarily a better team, depending on who leaves). Ideally, I'd give him four years unless next year is an absolute disaster.

yea I don't think he should be on the hot seat for at least another 2 years. He is recruiting so well so he should turn it around soon. He also should get a chance to bring in an X and O assistant.

C-. Team should have been better, no getting around it. There's enough talent there to do much better.
Posted on 3/15/14 at 12:44 am to heartbreakTiger
C-
no reason for the two losses to RI and Bama. We would probably be in the tournament if not for those 2 losses. We should have finished around 23-9 22-10

A couple of things in this thread made me think of a few points to add:
1) Not Jones-related, but I don't buy into the home vs. road disparity. All teams tend to play a bit better at home and I don't think LSU is a major exception. They looked like the same team to me in any venue. LSU basically won when they shot really well or their talent disparity overwhelmed the other team and lost any other time. They were bad in most phases of the game, which led to them losses when they didn't shoot great.
2) The sub patterns are bad. He never realized who to play and when. A great example to me is last night in the Alabama game, when he played an extended period with Quarterman and Hammink on the court. This actually worked out for LSU because Quarterman played his best stretch of the year. But it is a perfect example of a bad plan. This was potentially the last game of LSU's season and it was a close game early against a shite team. You should not be playing this rotation at this point.
Just because it worked doesn't make it a good idea (SEE ALSO: Every time Martin hits a 3 or any challenged long range jumper).

I'll give him a C.
For as Talented JOB is inside, he is very limited in other facets of his game. How many times does he force shots when doubled instead of kick it out?
Our guards can't finish at the rim and to boot they are short. I love the heart of Hickey but we need a PG that can be a threat in the lane to free up shooters.
Mickey looks promising. Lets hope the next crop is good.
