A buddy of mine has a newer Chevrolet Equinox. They are surprisingly spacious. He claims he gets upper 20s on the highway. I know a couple of people from work who have older versions (2005-2006) and they seem to have held up very well. The people I know who have them all seem love them.
I had a Trailblazer that was incredibly reliable but the gas mileage wasn't very good.
I'd look into the Equinox, CRV, and Rav4.....if you want something that can tow, look into the used Pathfinders, Envoys, and Trailblazers.
