The mantra in 2014 is "pound the zone". I doubt if they used the same slogan in 1995 and 1996. If I had pitched during those years I would have stood on the mound and just refused to throw the ball. Nothing good was going to result from throwing the ball anywhere near the strike zone in 1996.

Some games the philosphy was to actually throw fastballs off of the plate on the first pitch. You hope to get the batter to swing at a ball, or maybe the umpire gives you a called strike on a ball 8 inches off the plate. If the count became 1-0, throw an offspeed pitch in hope that the batter will get himself out on that pitch. If that didn't work, you were screwed.
