Mckinley only has 400 total students who take gifted classes. So you are saying at least half of those are from SG?

Can someone explain to me why high achieving public school students (GT kids) get second choice at BRMS now? Is this true?
The reason given is a student who has attended magnet schools all the way through should get first chance at continuing at a magnet school. The magnet schools are de facto 'feeder' schools into BRMHS.
A student at McKinley wrote a letter to the editor of the Advocate a few days after that article was published in which she was very upset that the article appeared to disrespect GT students, as if they are second class or something, compared to magnet students.
She provided some very impressive numbers regarding the graduates of McKinley as far as the scholarship dollars they get for college, how many of them are National Merit Scholars and how many of them achieve advance graduate degrees.
She proved her point that while BRMHS gets the publicity, McKinley is an excellent choice for anyone wanting to go to college.

They need magnet schools in ascension. Dutchtown is holding my child back.

I don't have a dog in this fight, nor do I understand what the point is but that seems possible to me.
When I was GT at least 80% of the kids were from the suburbs of BR (St George). It was easily 98% white/asian.

Are you STILL blind to the fact that you are advocating for a shitty school system?
I know that upsets you but if you stop making incorrect statements, I won't have to correct you.

Ok. Try this one on. Based on 2013 data, 80% of EBR schools are C-rated or below.

Ebr public school >>>> ascension. It's not even really close. They hold fast kids back in ascension and teach them at the pace they learn in ebr.

This was certainly true in my day. I can't name one kid that didn't (eventually graduate from a university). I did however get beaten by 4-6 innercity kids (unprovoked) and witness a handful of those events in my four years there.
Never heard this type of thing happening at BRH where many of my friends went.
For me the question is my kids safety and I'm a little bummed that I can't put him on the same path I was on and be afforded the same options. I don't feel as good about McK's safety as I did 20+ years ago.

Just look at the roads and highways and lack of infrastructure in Ascension and Livingston. Do you think people flocked to those parishes to raise children and start families because of the commute in I-12 or Airline Highway?
Look at the population shifts and the rise of those two school systems. Then tell me that its unfair to call EBRPSS a failure.
People act like St. George is a money grab. It ain't no such thing.
Oh, and for those that are talking up fears that everyone from LSU to L'Auberge to IBM allegedly have over this, let's flip this on its ear...Whose to say that the City of Baton Rouge isn't planning on increasing taxes inside the City Limits once it gets LSU, L'Auberge and the rest inside of its reach?
Look at Kip's disastrous attempt(s) to pass a BILLION DOLLARS IN TAXES to build a frickin' nature park downtown. You telling me he ain't licking his chops fanning the flames about St. George hoping to drive those entities into BR proper's arms?
If I had to choose the lesser of two evils, I'd choose St. George. Even though I can't. My family's lived in LP going back several generations...
But folks who think living inside of Kip's walled garden is any better than St. George's are myopic.

You are advocating that magnet schools in EBR are an accetable education.
You are willfully ignoring the majority of the population that does not have that opportunity.
Address the 80% of the schools in the parish with poor education and maybe we can take you seriously.

I would bet 10-15 yrs from now when Zachary is full grown, that precious letter grade will be around a C average.

That demographic has surely changed. Total Mckinley has 192/1199 non-African Amercian kids.
With Woodlawn now having a GT program I don't see how moving your kid to Woodlawn's GT program in your local community would not be an advantage.
The reason Zachary is successful is because the community is invested in the schools and not waiting for outside forces to solve their problems.

What a lot of parents don't realize, IMO, is that these schools just prep for the annual tests all year, instead of pushing the students to learn.
I can't stand the "pass at all costs so we can get a raise" mentality that prevails.

I believe its referred to as "Teaching to the Test".

Doubt that. Zachary had good schools even while in EBR. Now that they have control of their schools they won't let that grade slip.

They can call it whatever they want, it's a sham.

Better than worrying about when we are going to get an outlet mall or another chain of kohls, best buy, and cracker barrels like you see every other exit from here all the way through Florida.
At least a nature center will teach the kids something rather than shoving a xbox in your face and hounding you to sign up for a credit card.
