That's quid's hobbyhorse. Don't mind him. Contraction does nothing to help the financial health of the league, it is a hammer in negotiations with the player's unions to keep salaries down by threatening to eliminate X number of jobs. the fact fans fall for it shows that people will always unquestioningly suck up to ownership.
Having a team in Florida or a MLB team in Montreal or whatever has no bearing on a league's health. None.

I don't really mind the imbalance given that the West is so much better right now. Let it be easier to make the playoffs -- they have better teams right now.
Agreed.
Competitively its much easier to make the playoffs in the East then in the West right now.

So, making Columbus and Detroit move back to the West is fair?
I dont think 2 additional teams will hurt the NHL as much as some think. Attendance at NHL games is doing really well...better then the NBA actually. But moving Columbus and Detroit back to the West isnt happening, they just moved to the East.
I said OR not and.
And yes it is fair. They are further west than any other team in the east and there needs to be an east\west balance. One of those 2 need to move back.
And I agree expanding is not as dumb as some think (so long as they pick the right markets) however it is not a preferred option.
Also I do not think anyone needs to be contracted. Contacting should be a last resort to stop a league hemorrhaging money.

You can't necessarily say its not fair, because both columbus and Detroit wanted to go to the east, knowing this was the setup.
Who cares what they wanted. The end result of both of them moving east is it has made the west easier statistically to make the playoffs in and the east harder. There needs to be balance between the 2 conferences.
And one of the ways to fix it is to move 1 of those 2 back to the west.
The other fix is to either expand by 2 out west or some combination of relocating teams from the east out west (like Florida) then expanding to Quebec City + some western city.

Detroit hated being in the Western Conf. You had a team in the eastern time zone playing the majority of their games in time zones behind Detroit. Sucks as a fan with games coming on so late. Pretty much the same deal Houston has to deal with in the AL.

I dont understand why sports like the NBA, NHL and MLB have divisions at all? Get rid of the East/West format all together. Play everybody in the league, take the top 8 teams and they make the playoffs. The fans win in that regard because you get to see more variety of teams. For instance, i'm an Indians fan, does MLB reallly think i want to see Cleveland play (no disrespect) the Royals and the Twins 50 times a year? Let me see them play the Dodgers and the Cardinals! The NFL is the only league that needs divisions because of the 16 game schedule. They dont play everybody so there kind of has to be a divisional format. Every other league should just be strait up 1-32 or however many teams are in that said league.

That would be a ton of travel if you did away with divisions. The way the NHL is now, you play everyone not in your conference twice (once at home, one away). That's enough.
