The total loss of electrical equipment would prevent signals about a problem, but the plane is designed to still fly under those circumstances, Marks said.

from the same article on possible scenarios:

quote:

— Accidental shoot-down by some country’s military. In July 1988, the United States Navy missile cruiser USS Vincennes accidently shot down an Iran Air flight, killing all 290 passengers and crew. In September 1983, a Korean Air Lines flight was shot down by a Russian fighter jet.

The plane was entering Vietnam air space - maybe those asshats made a mistake ala USSR v KAL.

May account for all the silence from everywhere.

Just thinking about that scenario. We fessed up pretty quickly on the Vincennes shoot down. Some folks claim TWA 800 was shot down by the Navy. It's a very, very rare thing for a plane to spontaneously blow up without something hitting it.

There will be an investigation, and a conclusion to assure the public. Makes me want to pull out some of my old X-File DVDs.
