OH, THIS WENT WELL!!! 12 down votes!!!!
There were several aspects to this speech that jumped out at me initially. I wanted to really think about them before I commented. All them are hugely egotistical. You tell me.
1) "All these performances were impeccable in my opinion. I didn't see a false note anywhere."
It seems very condescending to say that you have evaluated your peers and found their work to be "impeccable." It implies that guys you gave a perfect performance and still couldn't win. Just to approach the others work on such a level was over the top. He could have said something to the effect he was honored to be counted in the group but I thought that went too far. He stood in judgment of them by his comments. I am not sure that was very well taken.
2) "And to my hero. That's who I chase. Now when I was 15 years old, I had a very important person in my life come to me and say "who's your hero?" And I said, "I don't know, I gotta think about that. Give me a couple of weeks." I come back two weeks later, this person comes up and says "who's your hero?" I said, "I thought about it. You know who it is? It's me in 10 years." So I turned 25. Ten years later, that same person comes to me and says, "So, are you a hero?" And I was like, "not even close. No, no, no." She said, "Why?" I said, "Because my hero's me at 35." So you see every day, every week, every month and every year of my life, my hero's always 10 years away. I'm never gonna be my hero. I'm not gonna attain that. I know I'm not, and that's just fine with me because that keeps me with somebody to keep on chasing."
Where in the hell did he come up with this load of crap? Talk about egotistical! Wow. The first stroke was awkard. This was nuts. I know it is good to have a healthy selfesteem but this is something else. I still have not decided how screwed up this part was. Right now I pretty sure it qualifies as a need for therapy.
And then there is this 3)
I have no problem with anyone thanking God or anyone whom they would like to credit but what the hell does that last bit mean? "When you've got God, you got a friend. And that friend is you." Is he saying he is his own God? Or that the Lord helps those who help themselves? He already said "He has graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand." How does that square with God is your friend and that friend is you. Is he saying the audience is God or that God is in each of us?
My boy MM did not disappoint on laying down the gauntlet on Oscar speeches!

quote:
There's a few things, about three things to my account that I need each day. One of them is something to look up to, another is something to look forward to, and another is someone to chase. Now, first off, I want to thank God. 'Cause that's who I look up to. He has graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand. He has shown me that it's a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. In the words of the late Charlie Laughton, who said, "When you've got God, you got a friend. And that friend is you."

how he views himself in the future is the person he is always striving to be, even though he knows perfection is unobtainable

"Alright alright alright"

It's all pretty self-explanatory

I watched it on Youtube after hearing people talk about it. I thought it was a great speech and did not find any of it confusing or egotistical at all.

Thought it was great.
dude is a straight shooter. Everyone else gives the same old bullshite canned speech. thanking countless people and such.
MM tells it how it is. His SAG speech was incredible. The emotion that he let flow in both of these was very refreshing. You don't have to be a cry baby to express joy, thanks, and admiration.

It was an object lesson on the perils of marijuana use.

I can't wait to see his future roles. He's no longer going to be doing any of that shirtless romantic comedy bullcrap. He's becoming a great actor the way he takes his roles so seriously.

jeez man, are you dumb? it's not like it was some confusing speech, it was pretty straight forward

Look up to..........God
Look forward to.............family
Chase your future self
Words every man could live by and would end up with wonderful life.

Completely self-explanatory to me.
Alright, alright, alright.
Alright, alright, alright.

I understood it after a couple of listens and loved it. I think the whole look up to the person you want to be in 10 years is brilliant. I've never had a true hero. I've always just wanted to be the best person I could be. The way I try to do that is take different parts of people I look up to and incorporate them into my life and improve on them. So, essentially, building on those things will push me towards being the person I want to be in 10 years, and that person is my hero. But, like MM, my hero will always be 10 years away.
I get that that's confusing but it makes perfect sense to me. Maybe me and MM can be best buds.

If you think he was being egotistical then you didn't understand what he was saying, simple as that. It was easy to misunderstand his point, but it wasn't I'm so awesome that I'm my own hero. It was a bit deeper than that.
