Jay Bilas: "I'd say it (LSU) is one of the top 20 jobs in college basketball"

Jay Bilas on the LSU job after the departure of John Brady as head coach.
Does this ring true in your mind? I think major fluctuations for programs are natural more so in college hoops than in any other sport comparably. Look at Arkansas and Michigan, in particular.
Arky was a national power under Nolan Richardson in the early-mid nineties but has fallen off the map since then under Stan Heath and John Pelphrey. They may finally reappear in the NCAA Tourney this season under Mike Anderson after a six year hiatus.
Michigan was a power under Steve Fisher during the fab five days of the early nineties. They fell off the map for a while didn't appear in the NCAAs for 11 years between 98-09. Starting to reascend to their prior stature now under John Beilein.

Same as Florida. We have the money and fanbase to support a top tier BB program. If we had a Billy Donovan we'd be just like Florida.
I just think that if you aren't a blue blood type finding that kind of coach can be more difficult. Plus the NBA one and done thing, blah blah. It's very possible IMO. Just need some stars to align

Our fans and facilities are dog shite. So no Bilas, you're wrong.

The PMAC would either have to get upgraded or replaced, and that's not on the schedule anytime soon.
The next athletic upgrades will focus on the natatorium...which is in dire need of renovation or replacement...and the new venue for beach vollyball.
The PMAC won't get any attention for at least three years IMO.

We need to get lucky and land another diamond in the ruff type of freak talent like tyrus thomas, chris jackson, shaquille oneal. A kid that hasnt exploded on the national stage yet in high school but does here.

On the balance I don't think so - the talent is certainly in the region but the school lives for football and baseball has a firm hold on the #2 spot. LSU has enormous potential to succeed for sure tho and the right coach would potentially be transformative IF he were interested in staying to build an elite program.

We really should do something about the configuration of the PMAC. The student section is just set up awfully.
Obviously we need to draw more students first, but still.

quote:Apparently our A.D. doesn't think so because he didn't assign that much importance to the budget and coaching search. Not to bash Jones because he may be ok/mediocre, its clear however that he is not a top 20 quality coach at least as far as in game coaching. We badly under achieved this year. Unfortunately his hiring is not indicative of a school that believes its basketball program is a high priority and has high potential, in my opinion.

-Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, UCLA
-Syracuse, Arizona, Michigan State, Ohio State, UConn
-Texas, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan, Florida
-Wisconsin, Memphis, Georgetown, Illinois, Cincinnati
Just off the top of my head, I tried to rattle off 20 teams. I'm not going to lie, towards the end I was struggling to put teams in over LSU. That being said, what makes LSU a better job than Notre Dame, St. John's, Pittsburgh, Mizzou, Temple, etc?
Honestly, other than history, what makes LSU a better job than Georgia? If you get a tob notch coach at UGA who can lock-down the Atlanta talent, Georgia would be a premier powerhouse. The same can be said with LSU locking down New Orleans (or really the whole state of Louisiana). LSU is definitely a top 30 job in my opinion. The inconsistency and all around apathetic attitude from the administration and fans demotes it though.

LSU is probably within the top 40 jobs in the country.
Face it, the SEC as a conference has really gone downhill. There was a time when Bilas was correct but not today.
